U16 - Recording Foley and Wild track Sounds

I have used four different sound recorders to record Foley and Wild track sounds. I did this to see which recorder is the most effective in recreating the real life sounds. These sounds include: Rain on gravel, Fire Crackling, Countryside, Crowded street, Restaurant, Classroom/School and Park. To record these different sounds I used random objects and the surroundings around me.

Recording on the Voice Recorder:

When using the voice recorder we created several sounds including; Rain on gravel, Fire Crackling, Countryside, Crowded street, Restaurant, Classroom/School and Park. When recording the sounds of a park, we went to the park and sat on the swings to make the sound of a child playing on the swings. We also recorded the sound of the countryside at the park as there was birds chirping. For the sound of a school, we went to one of the classrooms to record the sounds. We put the sounds together using Final Cut Pro. We also added titles so we knew what each sound was.

Recording on the USB Microphone:

On the USB Microphone we created two sounds; Fire Crackling and Rain on Gravel. When creating the sound of rain, we used sprinkles which we dropped into a square container, as you can see in this picture. To create the sound of fire crackling we used paper which we scrunched up into a ball as well as foil. When recording the sounds we made sure there was no background noise and that the microphone was close enough to catch the sounds being created.  We also used GarageBand to record the sounds and cut out the bits we didn't need.

Recording on the Lapel Microphone:

On the Lapel Microphone, we recorded Rain on Gravel and Fire Crackling. One of us would have to stay in the gallery where we would be in control of recording and changing the volume of the sound, whilst the other would be in the next room with a microphone attached to us and a camera in front of us. We could see each other through a window where we would communicate about when to start. When we started recording, we would then make the sound. I made the sound of fire crackling whilst my partner, Manpreet was in the gallery. Then, Manpreet made the sound of rain on gravel, whilst I was in the gallery.

Recording on the Camera:

When using the camera we recorded all of the sounds (Rain on gravel, Fire Crackling, Countryside, Crowded street, Restaurant, Classroom/School and Park). We used Final Cut Pro to import the sounds and put them together. For the sound of a restaurant, we went to our school canteen and recorded the sounds present. Then we recorded the sound of a crowded street by going to Oxford Circus where it was very busy and full of people talking and cars passing by.
